The Sorcerer II global research expedition, 2004-2005, was an extensive voyage of discovery led by Dr. J. Craig Venter, inspired in part by the Darwin and Challenger expeditions to evaluate marine and terrestrial biodiversity. Sorcerer II explored microbial biodiversity around the globe using a “whole environment” genomics approach, leading to the discovery of tens of thousands of new genes and microbes.
